International internships increasingly popular

by Michael Bekoff - 02/06/2009

"An intern is someone (usually a student) who will temporarily work within a company or organization to gain work experience. "

Student internships provide opportunities for students to gain experience in their field and help determine whether the specific company or field could be of interest to them in their future career. An internship is usually unpaid or partially paid in the form of a stipend. Internships on average last for approximately 3-6 months. There are basically two types of internships: a work experience internship and a research internship. The former would be more of a on-the-job training for the student to put in practice what he/she has learned in college or university. A research internship (or dissertation internship) is a research which a student does for a particular company, often in order to conduct his/her thesis. Many students go abroad for their internship do gain a cultural experience, learn an additional language and for traveling. The most popular destinations for international internships include Australia, China, and the USA. International internships have become increasingly popular the last few years, led by growing partnerships amongst universities, a globalization of the education and travel market and an increasing awareness and eagerness of students to travel and work abroad.
